The Phillies have signed their shortstop from last year, Didi Gregorious. He is coming off of a season where he was very mediocre as the shortstop for the Phils. Gregorious was expected to be a leader in the lineup, but fell in production from being away from Yankee Stadium.
Didi signed to a 2 year, $28 million deal with no option for the future. He needs to have a breakout year in 2021 and 2022 if he wants to solidify himself as one of the top shortstops in the game. He once was one of the clutch players with many big moments in his career, but he hasn't really had a really good year in a little while.
A few days ago it became clear the Phillies were between Gregorious and Andrelton Simmons to be their shortstop. After Simmons signed with the Twins, Philadelphia started pursuing the 30 year old. This move could backfire, or it can be one of the most underrated moves of the off season.
As 2021 is right around the corner, we will have to wait to see if Gregorious can be the shortstop he used to be. Gregorious has amazing potential, and still in the middle of his prime, he still has a chance to show how good he can really be.
