With the trade of Yu Darvish, we sensed something was going on with the Cubs. Those senses grew stronger over the weekend when Kyle Schwarber signed with the Nationals.
The Cubs are clearly in a new rebuilding phase. We could see Kris Bryant traded very soon and maybe even Javier Baez being shipped off somewhere else. With new ownership, the Cubs have switched directions, even though they have a great core featuring Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Ian Happ, and more. This means one thing, who will be the next star to move on from Chicago?
The direction of the Nationals is unclear, are they building up a new dynasty? Or are they rebuilding and building a team around an aging Schwarber and Josh Bell? Obviously they have Juan Soto, probably the best young superstar in the game right now, so why don't they build up the farm system to create a new super team around Soto in his prime. Remember, Soto is only 22 years old, and has a lot more time to still develop. Only two seasons behind a World Championship, they clearly are not giving up on this team. But Max Scherzer is not as great as he once was, and is in his final years on a Major League organization. We will see in the next few years how these decisions work out for each franchise.
